A solid template for easy prep…
Running TTRPGs should be an absolute blast, for the players and the GM!
Yet, somewhere along the way, modern GM culture created an unspoken rule that prep needs to look like a meticulously designed master thesis: complex faction webs, sprawling multi-level maps, and fully fleshed out lore for every NPC is portrayed as the norm. But it isn’t, and you don’t have to beat yourself up over not producing that level of prep for each session. A 5 Room Dungeon is perfectly fine, its adequate and you’ll definitely have run running it!
In this post I’ve put together a 5 Room Dungeon generator that works equally well for DnD, Shadowdark, and Adventurous. It’s nothing fancy, it won’t give you a complex dungeon with a deep story, but it will give you something you can run tonight, with minimal effort. And that’s the both the charm and strength of the 5 Room Dungeon concept, something simple that does the job. In a sense, you could say that it’s the “moms spaghetti” of adventure prep. Its simple, but it works.
But first, let’s just go through what a 5 room dungeon actually is.
What is a 5-Room Dungeon?
Pioneered by Johnn Four, the 5 Room Dungeon is a design framework that condenses a complete, satisfying adventure into five distinct beats. Instead of a massive, sprawling labyrinth, it focuses on high impact pacing that keeps the session moving.
Each room serves a specific narrative and tactical purpose, to ensure that all kinds of players and characters gets a chance to shine.
- Room 1: Entrance & Guardian. Establishes the dungeon’s vibe and demands a toll (resources, stealth, or combat) just to get inside.
- Room 2: Puzzle or Roleplaying Challenge. Shifts the tempo from combat to problem-solving, cleverness, or social interaction.
- Room 3: Trick or Setback. A mid-point complication that disrupts momentum, drains resources, or changes the battlefield.
- Room 4: Climax & Big Battle. The high stakes showdown against the primary boss, threat, or environmental climax.
- Room 5: Reward, Revelation, or Twist. The resolution, offering loot, a key takeaway, or a hook that sets up the next session.
Sure, it formulaic but the 5 Room Dungeon template gives you a tight 2-to-3-hour session that hits every major pillar of TTRPG gameplay, combat, exploration, and interaction, with zero fluff.
Is it even ok to use 5 room dungeons these days?
Let’s clear the air right out of the gate: Yes, absolutely.
There is zero prestige in spending twenty hours prepping for a four-hour session. There is no medal awarded to the GM who hand draws every single subterranean broom closet. The only metric that matters at the table is whether you and your friends are having fun. If a structural five room dungeon gets a session rolling with maximum excitement and minimum friction, then it is doing its job.
If you usually find yourself stressing, over prepping, or dreading game night because you haven’t finished your notes, take a deep breath. You are a player at the table too. Your fun, mental health, and enjoyment are just as important as the people controlling the PCs. The entire point of the hobby is for everyone at the table to share great experiences, including the person behind the screen. Simple templates like the 5 Room Dungeon framework are designed to lift that weight off your shoulders.
Now, let’s focus on the generator!
5 Room dungeon generator
First roll for theme, then roll once on each of the five room tables, referencing the theme you first rolled. Piece it together with or without a map, whatever you prefer.
The mechanical details in the tables are based on Shadowdark, but they can easily be adapted to any system with minimal work. The details are deliberately vague and sparse on details, to make sure all combinations of rooms in a theme work decently. Feel free to add any spice and detail. The purpose of this generator is just to help you get going and get as close to a read-to-run dungeon as possible.
Step 1: Dungeon theme
The first table establishes the theme, you’ll then reference the appropriate theme column in all the subsequent tables. To roll a D3, use a D6 and assign 1-2 to “1”, 3-4 to “2” and 5-6 to “3”.
| D3 | Dungeon Theme | Primary Environmental Vibe |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cave | Natural rock, damp air, echoing shadows, wild beasts, unstable terrain. |
| 2 | Tomb | Dust, silence, crumbling masonry, ancient rot, undead, lingering curses. |
| 3 | Temple | Intricate carvings, sacred grounds, forgotten magic, zealots, divine traps. |
Room 1: Entrance
The threshold that demands a toll.
| d10 | 1: Cave | 2: Tomb | 3: Temple |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Narrow fissure guarded by a sleeping brown bear. Sneaking past requires DC 12 DEX (disadvantage in heavy armor). | Rusted iron portcullis. Turning the winch rings an alarm, alerting 1d6 + 2 skeletons lurking near. | Grand marble steps flanked by two gargoyles. Stepping on the 3rd step triggers an acid trap (DC 12 DEX or 2d6 damage) and animates 1 gargoyle. |
| 2 | Sinking mud basin (near distance). Crossing takes double time. Moving faster requires DC 12 CON. 4 giant leeches hide in the mud. | Sealed stone slab requiring DC 12 STR (with crowbar) to open. Failure makes a loud crash, triggering an immediate encounter check. | Pillared entrance guarded by 3 cultist lookouts. They carry signal horns and blow them on round 2 of combat unless silenced or surprised. |
| 3 | Waterfall curtain hiding the tunnel entrance, instantly drenching unprotected torches. Three giant bats roosts above, attacking the first character carrying a lit light source. | Chokepoint of knee-deep bones. Moving through quietly requires DC 12 DEX. Failure awakens a wight lurking in an alcove ahead. | Brazier-lit archway blocked by a fire elemental. Extinguishing the magical brazier (DC 12 STR or DEX to overturn) instantly banishes it. |
| 4 | Slippery ledge over an abyss (DC 12 DEX to cross safely or fall 20 feet into lower rocks). A manticore on a high ledge hurls tail spikes at those crossing. | Crypt door rigged with a tripwire (DC 12 WIS to spot). Triggering it swings a scythe (2d6 damage) and releases 2 undead hounds (stats as skeleton). | Sunken courtyard guarded by an animated statue. It only attacks targets carrying visible metal weapons or wearing heavy armor. |
| 5 | Low crawlspace choked with sticky web. Cuts movement speed to close. Clearing it requires fire or blades. 1 giant spider drops onto PC walking last. | Defiled vestibule filled with freezing miasma. Passing through requires DC 12 CON or 1d4 DEX damage. A wraith waits at the door. | Sacred fountain pool home to a water elemental. It attempts to engulf whoever walks first (DC 12 STR or dragged under; drowning rules apply after 2 rounds). |
| 6 | Sulphurous fissure emitting noxious fumes (DC 12 CON or 1d4 CON damage). Guarded by 3 Deep Ones hiding in the haze. | Desecrated entry blocked by a wall of fused skulls. Demolishing it takes 1 round of loud noise, waking a flesh golem embedded in the wall. | Heavy bronze doors carved with a ravenous mouth. Unlatches only when offered 1 hit die worth of blood (or 1d6 damage voluntarily taken from a hero). |
| 7 | Loose scree slope (DC 9 DEX to climb safely; failure causes a slide dealing 1d4 damage and attracting three Stingbats). | Mausoleum gate trapped with a poison needle in the lock (DC 12 CON or 1d8 damage + paralyzed for 1 hour). Guarded by 2 ghasts. | Terrace choked with blood-sucking brambles (1d4 damage per turn to cross). Fire clears it, but the bright light alerts a vrock demon. |
| 8 | Subterranean river entrance with a swift current (DC 12 STR to swim across). A 2-headed hydra lurks beneath the dark waterline. | Sarcophagus-lined hallway patrolled by a gelatinous cube that fills the entire corridor width (near distance). | Grand archway guarded by a celestial hound. Demands the party state their noble quest; lying requires DC 12 CHA or it emits a blinding flash (DC 12 CON or blinded for 1d4 rounds). |
| 9 | Howling wind tunnel that automatically douses unshielded torches. 2 harpies perching above sing their captivating song (DC 12 WIS or walk toward the drop). | False tomb entrance with a pit trap (DC 12 WIS to spot). Falling in deals 1d6 damage and drops the target onto 2 hungry ghouls. | Whispering rotunda guarded by a blind priest. Immune to darkness and light, detecting any movement within near range by sound and scent. |
| 10 | Jagged rock maw where a manticore picks at a corpse. Demands half the party's rations or a mount to grant safe passage without a fight. | Sinking floor tile triggers a falling stone block (DC 12 DEX or 3d6 bludgeoning damage). The crash wakes 4 skeletons in wall alcoves. | Sunken vestibule where a medusa sits in shadow. Polished marble pillars allow characters to fight her via reflection (disadvantage on attacks, but avoids gaze). |
Room 2: Puzzle or roleplaying challenge
A change of pace. Requires cleverness, choices, or spending resources.
| d10 | 1: Cave | 2: Tomb | 3: Temple |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A trapped dwarf prospector under a boulder. Rescuing him (DC 12 STR) yields a crude map revealing details about Room 3. | A ghost bound to a burial urn. Will unbar the door if the party swears to return a stolen signet ring from Room 4's boss. | A stone sphinx statue that demands a riddle solved (DC 12 INT or answer correctly) to unseal the holy door. |
| 2 | An echo chamber where speaking louder than a whisper triggers a stone collapse (DC 12 DEX or 1d6 damage to all). | A rotatable dial puzzle requiring alignment of noble family crests (DC 12 INT or 3 failed attempts trigger a dart trap). | A magical scale balance. The door opens only if an equal weight of gold coin and non-precious personal gear is placed on the pans. |
| 3 | A rising tide cavern with a locked door under water (DC 12 DEX). Only one attempt per crawling round possible due to holding breath needed. | A trapped rival thief begging for release. Offers a potion of healing in exchange for freedom, but will betray the party at Room 4 if armed. | A light-prism puzzle requiring mirrors turned (DC 12 DEX) to align a beam of light onto the solar altar. |
| 4 | A bioluminescent fungal meadow. Spores require DC 12 CON or cause shared hallucinations (disadvantage on WIS for 1 hour). | A hallway of false doors. Inspecting murals (DC 12 WIS) reveals the correct door; wrong doors trigger poison darts (1d6 damage). | An altar demanding a sacrifice of memory. A volunteer forgets 1 spell or talent until their next rest to open the gate. |
| 5 | An injured goblin scout hiding behind stalagmites. Will guide the party past Room 3's trick if given 1 torch and 1 ration. | A mosaic floor representing holy saints. Stepping on non-consecrated tiles triggers a spear trap (1d8 damage, DC 12 DEX). | A choir of phantom monks. Passing requires a character to sing in harmony (DC 12 CHA or phantom screeches deal 1d6 damage). |
| 6 | A deep chasm spanned by a rotting rope bridge (DC 9 DEX to cross, or DC 12 if running). Heavy armor makes the bridge snap on failure. | A weeping banshee. She can be appeased without combat if given an item of deep sentimental value or a successful DC 12 CHA. | A scrying basin showing two doors. One leads to Room 3, the other drops the opener into a pit (DC 12 INT to decipher the vision). |
| 7 | A subterranean river with a giant toad ferryman. Demands 1 silver coin per passenger or a magical item to row across safely. | An astrologer's tomb with a celestial star lock (DC 12 INT). Failure rotates the room, swapping entry and exit orientations. | A penitent fanatic who refuses to let anyone pass unless they undergo a ceremonial lash (take 1d4 damage voluntarily). |
| 8 | A wall of glowing cave moss that absorbs light. Any light source brought within close range goes out instantly. | A skeletal knight playing a chess-like board game. Winning (DC 12 INT) opens the vault; losing triggers an attack. | A bell tower requiring a 3-bell sequence to shatter a force barrier (DC 12 WIS to read carved clues). |
| 9 | A pack of 4 kobolds holding the door lever. They demand all the party's iron spikes and rope as tribute. | A royal sarcophagus that opens only if a character wears the ceremonial robes resting on a nearby pedestal (robe is cursed: -1 AC). | A pool of holy water. Dipping a hand into it reveals a secret door, but unblessed characters take 1d4 damage. |
| 10 | A maze of identical stalactites that distorts direction. Navigating through requires DC 12 WIS or loop back to Room 1. | An ancient lich's apprentice spirit who demands an unread spell scroll or book before opening the inner sanctum door. | A trial of faith: a floorless chasm with an invisible bridge. Characters must step out blindly (DC 12 WIS to overcome fear). |
Room 3: Trick or setback
The complication. Depletes resources, splits the party, or changes conditions.
| d10 | 1: Cave | 2: Tomb | 3: Temple |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A sudden cave tremor. Falling rocks require DC 12 DEX or take 2d6 damage. The collapse blocks the door back to Room 2. | A chest of vanity gold. Picking up the coins transforms them into lead bars (encumbering) and locks the exit doors for 3 rounds. | An anti-magic field sphere (near radius). Spells cannot be cast, active magic items become mundane, and light spells fizzle. |
| 2 | Corrosive acid drippers. DC 12 DEX to dodge. On failure, 1 random piece of non-magical armor or weapon dissolves. | Wall vents trigger paralyzing gas (DC 12 CON or paralyzed for 1d4 rounds). | A mirror of opposition. Stepping past it creates a shadowy duplicate of the lead PC with half their HP; it attacks! |
| 3 | Floor collapses into a pit 10 feet down (1d6 damage). Pit contains 2 venomous snakes. | False treasure chest. Opening it drops a heavy iron cage over the opener (DC 12 STR to lift) as gas fills the room. | Divine alarm gong rings automatically when the door opens. Alerts Room 4's boss, removing any chance of surprise. |
| 4 | Methane gas pocket. Striking an open flame (torch or lantern) causes an explosion (2d6 damage to all within near range). The smell tips the PCs off. | Gravity inversion trap for 1 round. All unanchored gear and heroes fall to the ceiling (1d6 damage), scattering items. | Altar curse: any healing spell cast within this room deals damage instead of healing until leaving. |
| 5 | Flash flood from a broken wall. Drenches all torches and sweeps heroes back into Room 2 (DC 12 STR to hold ground). | Rotting plague spores (DC 12 CON or suffer 1d4 CON damage until a full night's rest). | Statues seal the doors and begin pouring sand into the room (3 rounds to pick lock or force door before suffocation). |
| 6 | Wall of magnetic iron ore. Pulls all metal weapons and heavy armor off heroes (DC 12 STR to pull a weapon free). | Floor tilts into a sliding ramp leading into a spiked pit (DC 12 DEX or take 1d6 damage). | Unholy relic aura. All enemies in the dungeon gain +1 to attack and damage rolls while this room's idol remains intact. |
| 7 | Dense cloud of blinding spores (DC 12 CON or blinded for 1d4 turns). | Soul-drain trap. Touching the central pedestal reduces maximum HP by 2 until resting for the night. | Glyph of confusion (DC 12 WIS or see all allies as hideous monsters for 3 rounds). |
| 8 | 2 rust monsters drop from the ceiling, attracted by metal armor and weapons. | A mummy's curse hexes the room (-2 to all stats until the curse is broken or cleansed). | Boiling floor tiles. Stepping on wrong tiles deals 1d6 damage (DC 12 WIS to trace the pattern). |
| 9 | Guano fire ignites in a high vault, consuming oxygen. Torches burn out twice as fast, and spellcasting requires DC 12 CON. | Memory-erase mist. PCs forget 1 memorized spell (DC 12 WIS to resist). | Pendulum of judgment. Blades swing across the exit. Crossing requires DC 12 DEX; failure takes 2d6 damage and knocks you back. |
| 10 | Sinkhole opens beneath the rearguard (DC 12 DEX or lose 1 random pack item or weapon into the dark depth). | A webbed nest bursts open, releasing a spider swarm each round until burned with fire. | An idol projects an aura of unnatural dread (DC 12 WIS or flee back to Room 1). |

|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A terrifying Cave Creeper lurking on the ceiling, dropping onto the party over a sharp chasm (DC 12 DEX save to avoid falling). | A Mummy awakening from a stone sarcophagus. Its gaze forces a DC 12 WIS save or PCs become Paralyzed with fear for 1 round. | A Cultist Leader (Archmage) completing an unholy spell atop a blood altar, shielded by 2 Cultists. |
| 2 | A massive Owlbear defending its territory from high, rocky terrain (ADV on melee attack rolls from above). | A Wight surrounded by 3 Skeletons (shields and spears), commanding them from atop a throne of carved bone. | Two Gargoyles perching on arched pillars, diving down to snatch torches (DC 12 DEX save or light source is extinguished). |

| 4 | A predatory Roper disguised as a stalactite, reeling targets toward a boiling mud pit (DC 12 STR check to break tendril grapple). | A Gelatinous Cube blocking the main escape archway; moving faster than Near distance automatically engulfs the lead PC (DC 12 STR check to break free). | A ravenous Minotaur stalking inside a pillared maze chamber filled with blinding incense (DISADV on WIS checks to navigate). |
| 5 | A Goblin Boss mounted on a Giant Spider, commanding 3 Goblins with shortbows on high ledges (Far range). | A haunting Wraith phasing through crypt walls to attack the rearguard, draining life on hit (DC 12 CON save). | An Archmage utilizing a sacred mirror wall to project illusions of himself while casting shadow spells. |
| 6 | A territorial Young Black Dragon coiled around a pile of sunken loot in a venomous swamp cavern. | A pack of 4 Ghouls (hit forces DC 12 CON save or Paralyzed for 1 round) gnawing on human remains, leaping from shadowed alcoves on round 1 with surprise. | A violent Air Elemental summoned within a sealed rotunda (extinguishes all open flames within Near distance on round 2). |
| 7 | An ambush by 6 Troglodytes in thick fog (attacks beyond Close distance have DISADV). | A Ghost guarding the tomb’s inner vault, wailing a horrific scream (DC 12 WIS save or flee to Room 1). | An Evil Wizard (Mage) firing magic missiles from behind a glowing protective barrier (DC 12 INT check to dispel). |
| 8 | A giant Purple Worm head bursting from the cavern floor, creating a massive sinkhole (DC 12 DEX save to hold ground). | 5 Shadows lurking beneath a central sarcophagus. | A Hell Hound guarding the sanctum gates, unleashing a cone of fire breath (DC 12 DEX save for half damage). |
| 9 | A deadly Drider weaving a canopy of thick webs over a bottomless chasm (crossing requires DC 12 DEX check or become tangled and fall). | An animated Iron Golem marching down a narrow hall, immune to mundane weapons. | A Cubi Devil bound to an iron altar, fighting furiously to break its final magical chains. |
| 10 | An Earth Elemental smashing key support pillars, leaving the party 5 rounds to win before the ceiling collapses. | A Lich controlling 3 Skeletons guarding its phylactery atop a central altar. | A fanatic High Priest (Priest) preaching to 3 Werewolves in the inner sanctum. |

Final thoughts – Prep doesn’t have to be a chore
At the end of the day, prep doesn’t need to be complex or exhausting to be memorable. Not every game session has to involve intricate faction play. Sometimes, your table just needs a fun, punchy, atmospheric dungeon to kick down some doors, test their wits, and roll some dice.
I hope you get good use of this 5 Room Dungeon generator, but if you need more fleshed out adventures, be sure to check out The Meadery Mishap and Dawnseeker Abbey, our Shadowdark Modules, which have been featured in the official Shadowdark Newsletter by Arcane Library.
